SOM debuts a new, carbon-neutral bio-cement building material in the form of a public installation inside The Mews. Manufactured by Prometheus Materials and built by the International Masonry Institute, Bio-Block™ Spiral applies typical Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) construction techniques to the algae-based Bio-Blocks™, demonstrating how the design, manufacturing, and construction industries can collaboratively pilot innovative solutions to the global climate crisis. Hosted by Shapack Partners, Focus, and Walton Street Capital at 167 Green Street in Fulton Market District, Bio-Block Spiral™ is a continuation of SOM’s research in material innovation for the Biennial, including Stereoform Slab in 2019 and SPLAM Timber Pavilion in 2021.
