Gramazio Kohler Research, ETH Zürich + Self Assembly Lab, MIT

Zürich, Switzerland; Cambridge, United States

Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler founded the architecture practice Gramazio Kohler Architects in 2000. Their research merges advanced architectural design and additive robotic fabrication. Together with leading researchers in architecture, material sciences, computation, and robotics, Gramazio and Kohler have opened the world’s first architectural robotic laboratory at ETH Zürich. Their work has been published extensively, and displayed in venues such as the Venice Architecture Biennale, the Storefront for Art and Architecture, and FRAC Centre.

The MIT Self-Assembly Lab, directed by Skylar Tibbits, focuses on self-assembly and programmable material technologies for novel manufacturing, production, and construction processes. The lab is looking at potential applications for the manufacturing process across a wide range of disciplines, including biology, material science, software, robotics, manufacturing, transportation, infrastructure, construction, the arts, and even space exploration.
