Carlos Bunga

Barcelona, Spain

Born 1976 in Porto, Portugal
Lives and works in Barcelona, Spain

Carlos Bunga creates process-oriented works — installations, performances, video, drawings and sculpture — that refer to and intervene in their architectural surroundings. While often using ordinary, unassuming materials such as cardboard and adhesive tape, the resulting finished works involve an extreme degree of aesthetic care and delicacy, as well as a conceptual complexity derived from the interrelationship between doing and undoing, between unmaking and remaking.

After studying Fine Arts at the Escola Superior de Arte e Design in Caldas da Rainha in Portugal, Bunga first attracted international attention with his work at the contemporary art biennial Manifesta 5 in San Sebastian, Spain (2004). Since then, he has been awarded a visual arts grant by the Fundación Marcelino Botín, Spain (2006) and has had solo shows of his work at Haus Konstruktiv Museum, Zurich (2015), Serralves Museum, Porto, Portugal (2012); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA (2011), Pinacoteca Art Museum of São Paulo (2010), Miami Art Museum, Miami, FL (2009) and Vigo Art Museum, Spain (2009). Group exhibitions include Artes Mundi 6, National Museum of Art, Cardiff, UK (2014), University Art Museum, University of California, Santa Barbara, CA (2012);  29th Sao Paulo Biennial (2010),  Post-Monument, XIV International Sculpture Biennale of Carrara, Italy (2010), Warsaw Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw, Poland (2009); New Museum, New York, NY (2007); Artists Space, New York, NY (2005); and as part of Farsites/inSite_05 at San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego, CA (2005).
