Project Overview

Another Raumplan

Bureau Spectacular speculates on the relationship between photography and architectural desires with a model based on the ubiquitous photography of Adolf Loos’s Villa Müller interior. As Beatriz Colomina argued in her book Sexuality and Space (1992) the villa organized space based on the construct of viewer and the viewed. A photograph of the interior documents the power of architecture to be a mechanism and producer of subjectivity. One could argue that Villa Müller was built to facilitate voyeurism and construct a spatial relationship between the viewer who hold the power over the actions of the subject. These ideas materialize in a viewing machine; the reexamination of Villa Müller’s constructed and framed views might shed new light on the relationships between interiority and exteriority to produce a new interpretation of Loos.
