Myth of the Organic City

at 6018North

6018 N Kenmore Ave, Chicago, IL 60660

Open Saturday and Sunday, 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Myth of the Organic City draws from Chicago’s seal, which proclaims “Urbs in Horto,” or “City in a Garden,” as a projection of environmental custodianship. However, Chicago has been designed and constructed in often inequitable and unsustainable ways, with cycles of dispossession and dislocation of nature and people. The exhibition pairs a broad historical overview with contemporary artworks that reimagine our complicated relationship with the city and nature. The exhibition features works by more than fifty contemporary artists with ties to Chicago, including Luftwerk, Amanda Williams, and many more.

On November 9, 1:00–2:30 p.m. and November 22, 4:00–5:30 p.m., participating artist Tria Smith will present Lullaby Exchange. From a cozy nest of beds, blankets, and lamps within the exhibition, visitors are invited to sing a lullaby. It can be a lullaby once sung to you, a lullaby you sang to someone else, or a lullaby you long for!

Myth of the Organic City is funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art.

Note: There is wheelchair access on the 1st floor only. Lullaby Exchange takes place on the 3rd floor.
