About the program
For millennia, people have worked with what is already there, but today adaptive reuse is no longer just a question of necessity, symbolism, or efficiency. It has become a response to social transition and an expression of new ecological awareness—a way of healing what has been previously damaged by human activity.
Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Living With, sponsored by Saint-Gobain and Villa Albertine, the French Institute for Culture and Education, this panel asks: What happens when we choose to rehabilitate and transform rather than demolish? How can architecture give new purpose to what was once considered obsolete? And how can it reimagine existing spaces to respond to societal needs that shift—sometimes gradually, sometimes abruptly?
