This program explores the city’s far north and northwest sides and provides an in-depth look at a variety of Art Deco structures, including both residential and commercial buildings, as well as a college, a bridge, and a mausoleum. Some are well-preserved city landmarks; some sport bold polychromatic terra cotta facades, the likes of which are not seen downtown. But all of them have striking geometric ornamentation that reflected the optimism and prosperity of the Roaring 20s and that is still eye-catching today.

Program Presenter: Bill Coffin Bill Coffin is a former appellate attorney and adjunct professor of legal research and writing, Bill Coffin became a CAC docent in 2004. He is the tour director for the CAC‘s two Art Deco walking tours and has presented lectures about Art Deco at the CAC and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, a program of Northwestern University’s School of Professional Studies. He enjoys sharing photos of Art Deco buildings with friends from his travels to cities big and small all across the country.
