Chicago, United States
Sung Jang is a Korean-born American designer whose practice spans art, architecture, and industrial design. His work investigates perception, beauty, and material culture through a cross-cultural lens. A long-term study of Mobi, a modular system exploring complexity through simple rules, reflects his interest in efficiency and elegance. Jang explores the influence of Korean heritage on contemporary production and design values. He has collaborated with Louis Vuitton, Artemide, Samsung, and LG, and exhibited at the Venice Biennale, MoMA, the V&A, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Jang holds a BFA from SAIC and a Master’s from Domus Academy. He currently teaches industrial design at the University of Illinois Chicago.
2025 Biennial Project
Project Overview
Sound Territory
This installation explores how sound can shape the way we experience space. A series of sound-generating objects—linked to themes like architecture, machines, nature, and human presence—are placed along a corridor. As visitors walk through, their movement activates shifting layers of sound. These overlapping sounds form a changing soundscape that invites reflection on how we perceive boundaries—not only through walls, but also through what we hear. Inspired by artist Antony Gormley’s idea of spatial reach, the work treats sound as a tool for measuring space. Blending abstract compositions with real-world recordings, the installation offers an immersive experience where sound defines and transforms the environment, showing that space is both physical and emotional, shaped by presence and perception.
