Sharon Johnston FAIA and Mark Lee are the founding partners of Johnston Marklee. Their work is recognized internationally for its engagement with arts and culture within the contemporary city, while rooted in the history and foundations of the discipline. Since its establishment in 1998, Johnston Marklee has garnered over 50 major awards, including the Richard Neutra Medal and the American Academy of Arts & Letters Award. Monographs on the firm’s work include 2G N.67, El Croquis N.198, A+U N.614, and the book, HOUSE IS A HOUSE IS A HOUSE IS A HOUSE IS A HOUSE, published by Birkhäuser. In 2017, Johnston and Lee served as Artistic Directors of the second Chicago Architecture Biennial: Make New History. Johnston and Lee have taught at UCLA, Princeton University, ETH Zurich, and the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where Lee is Chair Emeritus of the Department of Architecture. Recent projects include the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program home at Roy Lichtenstein Studio in New York, the UCLA Margo Leavin Graduate Art Studios in Los Angeles, and the Menil Drawing Institute in Houston.

2025 Biennial Projects

Project Overview

Located on the second floor of 840 North Michigan Avenue, this project takes the form of a grandstand with seating for more than 50 people to host talks, panels, and other public events throughout the Biennial. Speaker Corners has been conceived as part of a series of spaces that promote discussions, presentations and exchange, which began with “Speakers’ Corner,” an installation by Christopher Hawthorne, Florencia Rodriguez, and Johnston Marklee at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia 2025.

The Biennial expands its footprint downtown with the opening of its fifth site at 840 N. Michigan Avenue, transforming more than 65,000 square feet of space on the Magnificent Mile into a dynamic hub for art, design, and dialogue.
