Ibañez Kim
Los Angeles, United States
Ibañez Kim is a design practice founded by Mariana Ibañez and Simon Kim, working at the intersection of architecture, objects, and urbanism. Their work blends experimental research and cultural narratives to create spaces that rethink place-making and design. Mariana chairs UCLA’s Architecture and Urban Design department; Simon is associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Their professional and academic work informs one another, enabling innovation across scales. Ibañez Kim has produced projects for institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Institute of Contemporary Art, and the Smithsonian Institution. Mariana is originally from Buenos Aires, and Simon from Seoul; they met at the Architectural Association in London. Following early work at Zaha Hadid Architects, they continued with postgraduate studies and teaching at MIT and Harvard, respectively.

Project Overview
Untitled: Head in the Clouds
A tall vertical figure—a box with a stacked array of columns supported on four posts—presents a world within a column. Made entirely of prefabricated extruded metal, the installation reveals a postwar dream: a single-family home endlessly repeating across a reflective landscape. Drawing on the mirrored worlds of Yayoi Kusama and the architectural figures of John Hejduk, the work reflects on ideas of collectivity, citizenship, industrialization, and the built environment.
