Stewart Hicks

Stewart Hicks is an associate professor and associate dean at the University of Illinois Chicago. He holds a Masters of Architecture degree from Princeton University and co-founded the practice Design With Company in 2008 with partner Allison Newmyer. His work has earned awards such as the Architectural Record Design Vanguard award and the Young Architects Forum award and has been featured in exhibitions such as the Chicago Architecture Biennial and Design Miami, as well as at the V&A and Tate Modern in London. His writings can be found in the co-authored book Misguided Tactics for Propriety Calibration (Graham Foundation, 2015), as well as essays in MONU magazine, the AIA journal Manifest, Log, bracket, and the guest-edited issue of MAS Context on the topic of character in architecture. In 2021, after recording lectures for courses during the pandemic, Stewart Hicks began experimenting with uploading fragments of the longer talks to YouTube as stand alone videos. Today, the eponymously named YouTube channel hosts over one hundred and fifty videos, which have been viewed more than eighty million times, luring a diverse world-wide audience into dialogue about architecture.

This project re-imagines Chicago as an interconnected web of architectural stories. Through an interactive city map with more than ninety-five callouts, locations across Chicago serve as entry points to narratives explored on the YouTube channel Stewart Hicks: Takes on Buildings.

The Biennial expands its footprint downtown with the opening of its fifth site at 840 N. Michigan Avenue, transforming more than 65,000 square feet of space on the Magnificent Mile into a dynamic hub for art, design, and dialogue.
