Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R)

New York, United States

Founded in 1981 by Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) is a design studio whose practice spans the fields of architecture, urban design, installation art, multi-media performance, digital media, and print. With a focus on cultural and civic projects, DS+R’s work addresses the changing role of institutions and the future of cities. The studio’s approach to rethinking cultural institutions and civic spaces grew out of self-generated and alternative projects that blur the boundaries between architecture, art and performance. The studio is based in New York and comprises over 100 architects, designers, artists and researchers, led by Elizabeth Diller, Charles Renfro and Benjamin Gilmartin. DS+R’s cross genre work has been twice distinguished with TIME’s “100 Most Influential People” list and the first grant awarded in the field of architecture from the MacArthur Foundation, which identified Diller and Scofidio as, “architects who have created an alternative form of architectural practice that unites design, performance, and electronic media with cultural and architectural theory and criticism.”

Project Overview

Bad Press

Efficiency entered the home in the early 20th century, especially through Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky’s compact Frankfurt Kitchen (1926), designed to save time, space, money, and effort. This push for household efficiency brought many new appliances—called electric servants—that promised to free housewives and help them join the workforce. But in reality, these gains often led to more housework.

This project looks at ironing habits. For example, ironing a man’s shirt creates a flat, rectangular shape with few wrinkles. This shape saves space and fits easily into storage, transport, and display. The clean, crisp look has become a symbol of refinement. But what if ironing didn’t have to follow these efficient patterns?

Bad Press experiments with more labor-intensive ways to fold, button, and press shirts, creating designs that can’t be easily packed or stacked but make a strong statement when worn.
