BURR
Madrid, Spain
BURR is an experimental architecture practice led by Elena Fuertes, Ramón Martínez, Álvaro Molins, and Jorge Sobejano. Their name, BURR, refers to imperfections or remnants produced during material transformation, reflecting their interest in conditions often excluded from aesthetic or functional norms. Their work is experimental and seeks to expand the range of spatial experiences, techniques, materials, and spatial-use models. BURR has received distinctions including the XVI Spanish Urbanism and Architecture Biennale Award (BEAU XVI), 2025 Next 30 Design Awards, and FAD (finalist), and COAM (honorable mention). They have lectured at institutions such as GSAPP, RISD, Université Laval, HEAD Genève, RIXC, and CA2M. Their work has been featured in Domus, Detail, Frame, AV, Dwell, and Archpaper. BURR also runs Espacio Gaviota, an exhibition space in Madrid supporting independent cultural initiatives.
2025 Biennial Project
Project Overview
Minor Tectonics
This installation uses woven materials to explore the hidden history of textiles in architecture. From nomadic tents and medieval tapestries to domestic curtains and church veils, the project highlights how soft, flexible materials have long shaped space—often overlooked in traditional architectural discourse. Today, this asks how architects can engage with existing structures and heritage rather than starting from scratch, inviting viewers to consider the growing need to reuse, adapt, and reinterpret existing spatial conditions rather than replace them.
