Breathe Architecture

Melbourne, Australia

Breathe is Australia’s most awarded sustainable architecture and design studio. Architects, advocates, and change agents, they represent the people in the cities where they live and work, and the planet we all share. The studio states that it uses “design as a weapon for good” to build a better future. Its purpose and values stem from a belief in its capacity to make a difference—an outlook that reveals broader opportunities others may overlook or avoid.

2025 Biennial Project

Project Overview

Nightingale Preston

Nightingale Preston reimagines collective housing as both a cultural and ecological practice, embedding social equity and environmental stewardship into the urban fabric. By integrating layers of precolonial biodiversity, postcolonial industry, and modern infrastructure, it transforms contested histories into a framework for community regeneration. Compact dwellings, shared amenities, and biodiverse landscapes democratize access to security and comfort while resisting the alienation of late modern housing markets. The project reinforces the idea that architecture can mediate between past and future, individual and collective, necessity and aspiration.
