About the program
Known for his Red and Blue Chair and the groundbreaking Schröder House, architect Gerrit Rietveld believed that homes should function like living sculptures. Living in a Piece of Furniture focuses on the iconic 1924 Rietveld Schröderhuis, the first house that Rietveld designed, in collaboration with and for Truus Schröder, a Dutch socialite and decades-long friend of Rietveld’s.
Exploring several of Rietveld’s private residential projects through the experiences of their current residents, this film reveals how his design philosophy shaped not only the spaces themselves but the lives within them.
This screening is presented by Chicago Architecture Center as part of the Architecture & Design Film Festival: CHICAGO. From February 19—22, 2026, the festival presents 10 feature-length screenings in two downtown venues—with many screenings including Q&As with the filmmakers.
