Housing Beyond Market Logic: A Grand Domestic Revolution in Neoliberal Space and Time

Venue

Neoliberalism is an attempt to wring the last drops of profitability from a predatory capitalist system, by attempting to reorder all relationships both inside and outside of economic markets, through a competitive logic of exchange. Fundamental to this project has been the undermining of a belief that housing is the foundation of healthy life, and the promotion of the idea that it is first and foremost an exchangeable investment. This transformation of values has meant that for most people, personal empowerment can only be seen as a struggle for private housing in a competitive market of scarcity. Located within Adrian Blackwell’s Anarchitectural Library, "Housing Beyond Market Logic: A Grand Domestic Revolution in Neoliberal Space and Time" will look instead at tools to produce self-empowered, generous, and flexible housing, at the scale of the neighborhood, building and unit.
