Brendan Fernandes: 72 Seasons
Chicago-based contemporary artist Brendan Fernandes presents "72 Seasons," a free public performance-based artwork and installation within Lurie Garden in Millennium Park, Chicago. The movement-based piece, featuring dancers outfitted with custom costumes by Rad Hourani, engages with ballet history and Chicago’s prairie landscape to envision passages of time demarcated by the Japanese calendar. Performances take place on August 21, September 25, and October 23, 2021, from 1:00–3:00pm. Presented in partnership with the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and the Joan W. and Irving B. Harris Theater for Music and Dance.
Outdoor spaces and common areas have taken on new meaning in a post-pandemic world. In 72 Seasons, Fernandes questions how humans, the most ‘invasive’ species on the planet, occupy the ‘native’ environment of a perennial public garden. In addition to the performances, key components of the installation include a series of sculptural plaques, disguised as plant stake markers used to identify flora, to host poems and texts written by the artist and curators with graphic design by the Chicago-based firm Platform.
